Quality Content – Here We Go Again

I almost feel like I need to apologize for even mentioning ‘quality content’, or ‘content is king’ again. I get tired of hearing it also. This posts isn’t to ramble on about it again however. It is about the importance of your content, but it came about because of a post I just saw on another blog.

Although I don’t really have any certain blogs that I read religiously, I was looking over some posts at DailyBlogTips.com. That is one of the blogs I regularly spend some time on. I saw a post there with ‘content’ in the title, and nearly kept on looking because I almost throw up when I see CONTENT IS KING, or anything even similar.

However, the post was referencing an article that was posted by Maki from Dosh Dosh fame. He announced that his RSS subscriber list had reached (10,000) readers. Quite an accomplishment by anyone’s standards. The posts wasn’t just a self-promoting post about the number of readers that he had managed to recruit though. It was mainly about what he HADN’T done to get them.

We all know about the content, God do we know. What I found really somewhat amazing, was the following list of things he didn’t do. I would never, ever, EVER plagiarize anything, so I’ll tell you, this is a quote from Maki himself.

  1. No Feedcount. I did not display my feed count on Dosh Dosh for its entire lifespan and yesterday afternoon was the first time I put up my feed numbers. My feed count was also deactivated until I reached 8000 subscribers, which means no one could discover how many subscribers I had until that point.
  2. No Guest Posting. I have not written any guest posts for any site with the purpose of driving traffic back to my blog. I only wrote for Dosh Dosh.
  3. No Contests/Projects. Never held any contests, group writing projects, blog carnivals or competitions at all on this blog.
  4. No Advertising. Not a single cent was spent on buying ads to promote Dosh Dosh. Every single visitor that comes to this blog is organic.
  5. No Incentives. Apart from the content itself, I have never offered any incentives to encourage subscriptions. This means no ebooks, free reviews or gifts of any sort.
  6. No Guest bloggers. No one else has ever written any articles on this blog.
  7. No Digg frontpages. A long time ago, an article reached the Digg frontpage and was buried in a few minutes. After that, all content from Dosh Dosh has been automatically buried by Digg’s internal system (a plausible theory).
  8. No Frequent Posting. For the later part of Dosh Dosh’s lifespan, I wrote infrequently, sometimes only publishing one or two articles in an entire week.

I think this is the ultimate example of the value of the content on any site. As Daniel mentioned in his post, I would never underestimate the value of, or recommend not utilizing any method for generating traffic. As long as the method isn’t something that could be considered spamming, desperate, oe just plain tacky.

Even in my very short blogging career, I’ve seen great results that others have achieved with contests, guest bloggers, social bookmarking sites, and many other methods. In the end though, regardless of the amount of traffic that you may be able to get to your site, it still comes down to being able to keep them there with something of interest.

In closing, here is another quote from Maki that sums it up very nicely. Oh, remember, this is coming from the guy with the (10,000) RSS subscribers (actually over 12,000 now). Not from yours truly that would pay for the subscribers, if I could. ;)

“What does this prove, if anything ? That it’s very possible to get a decent readership even if you don’t overtly go after subscribers by purchasing ads or providing incentives. Creating excellent content and getting exposure for it through the right influencers and platforms is very important.”
