Setting Goals

Having a head somewhat like a piece of Granite (hard). I never thought I’d be writing an article about setting goals. Mainly because, after reading about ellefenty eight thousand articles about setting goals, I always thought, ‘why waste your time doing that crap, I know what I need to be doing, I don’t need it written down’…WRONG!.

I recently went ahead and got a notepad, wrote down a list of (5) things I wanted to accomplish for that day. Before I go any further, I need to say, a simple to-do list does not a set of goals make. Although I believe a to-do list does help me out in my day to day tasks, when setting goals, you need need to look at it a little differently. A to-do list might be:

1.) Go to the Post Office

2.) Go to the Grocery Store

3.) Pickup Bob at Work

Just a reminder of things that you need to do for the day.

When setting goals you need to put down, in writing something that needs to be accomplished at some point in the future. Actually, something that can be measured as being achieved. You, hopefully achieve a little part of it daily. A goal is something that you should have a vision of yourself reaching, something that will add something substantial to your life. Relating to Affiliate Marketing, it may be measured in financial terms. Goals however, shouldn’t just be about money. It’s easy to say, ‘my goal is to be a multimillionaire’ in (2) years. Well, striving for financial independence is great, but a true goal should be something more realistically obtainable. You may achieve that (2) year goal, but it would be more realistic to think, ‘I want to be making $300 per month using AM techniques and other online means to work towards your end result. I believe to really add substance to your life however, you should have goals of making yourself a better person, trying to help people when you can…goals of substance.

I believe it’s better to set shorter term goals, that are very achievable, on the road to your long term goal of being wealthy. Personally, I’m not sure of having ‘only’ money as your final long term goal is complete, but that’s just my feelings, as mentioned previously.

In order to make your goals more manageable, understandable and obtainable, I’ve come up with a short list on setting and managing your goals.

  1. Write Down Your Goals – You can do this on paper or have a document on the computer, it doesn’t really matter. However, have the list within easy view, and look at it often. Remember, setting more easily obtainable short term goals, on your way to your long term goals, will help you stay focused and motivated. Everyone likes, and even needs feelings of accomplishment, make sure your goals aren’t too far fetched.
  2. Make Yours Goals Specific and Obtainable – I touched on this in the previous step. If you set your goals realistically, you are setting yourself up for failure. Goals of, ‘I want to have $1,000,000 in the bank byt he end of the year, are probably unrealistic, and at least for most of us, unobtainable. As mentioned before, set shorter term goals, more easily attainable, on your way to your ultimate goals.
  3. Have a Goal Metric – What I mean here, is simply to have a way to measure your goal(s). A goal of, ‘I wanna have some money’ isn’t really measurable in the sense of knowing if you actually achieved an end result. A goal of, ‘I want to have an income of $300 from my online ventures’ is. There’s also nothing wrong, of course with having Life Goals of I want to share more of my time with my Family.

Make Your Goals Attainable – I also touched on this before, but I can’t stress this enough, it’s as important as setting your goals in the first place. Make your goals realistic and attainable. If you really want to make things bad for yourself, write down a list of goals that are totally unrealistic, and then systematically fail at one after another. I can guarantee any plans you had of succeeding at anything will be ruined. Also, try your best to stick to your realistic goals, but also know, that as in most things in life, your goals can change too. That just means that you may have to modify things a bit to make your long term goals achievable, it doesn’t mean that you should change your goals because you’re getting lazy and they seem too difficult.

So go ahead and write down your realistic goals and get started on the road to achieving them. Try and have your ‘baby-step’ goals in there also, the short term, ‘pat-yourself-on-the-back’ goals. You want the feeling of satisfaction you’ll receive when you accomplish what you set out to achieve.
